Sitting next to a roaring, tall, blue fire that danced in a skull adorned fireplace, the cloak figure sipped from a chalice made from transparent obsidian. Laying upon his lap was yet another large tome, yet this time there were several others stacked next to the tall, encompassing chair. Running his claws upon the cover, he popped the lock open with a gesture, his eyes glowing yellow as he began to speak."
I have awaited this moment and here we are, my fiendish children, standing at the maw as it opens wide yet it does not feast on us, no. Emanating from this chasm comes a great many howls, the first of which being Archemoron. So begins the reign of terror and the wall of sound brought upon us by Satanath Records!
This is one of four superb albums I was presented in succession from this record label and it was only more solidified by numerous comments saying that this label seems to be unable to release or support a bad album, and I must agree. Though recently, I have seen a messages asking for aid and since they have offered me so much over the years, it is the least I can do to not only showcase these fine artists but also set others on the path of acquisiton for their very own collections from this astounding label.
So, the Satanath journey begins with the legendary and haunting Archemoron. To start off, this album hooked me instantly yet I have learned since that it is due to them being well practiced however unknown to me (no shocker there). If you are seeking thunderous black metal dripping with melody and power then Flagellum I is the album to give your attention. The Greek wraiths call and wail for you to listen!
1.) Uranos - This first track is carefully selected, really showcasing their strength and skills up front and wholly unleashed. Great selection to start with, you wicked beasts! Setting the pace for what is to follow.
2.) When Blades Shape Our Feelings - This track always surprises with the way it begins and evolves, pulling you in more and more, always expecting it to taper off or slow down but no, this one gets me every time and it shall you as well. Steel yourselves for this epic track.
3.) The Unhallowed - There is something heavier, weightier about this track, just the way it's structured or the focus on the power within each instrument and vocals. This one is quite captivating the more and more it goes on without you really even noticing. A welcome surprise in an already stellar lineup.
4.) Still In Sadness - A solid beginning to hook you that builds into a head banging rythym yet 2:25 lulls you back into the melody before unleashing some sick guitar work and drums upon the air all the way out.
5.) Thronos - The title and intro do a wonderful job of luring you in because this track, my fiends, has one hell of a segment within, check out 6:28 on and you will understand. That is how you buildup and unleash. This one completely caught me off guard and sold me immediately on this band's abilities.
6.) Red Eyes In The Mist - Strumming into existence, this track explodes shortly after into a surge of enchanting riffs and vocals yet the best is further, check out the build up from 3:06 to the wild ride it offers until the very end. Absolutely awesome.
7.) Utter Tranquility - The melodic beginning is a good way to start the final track on the album as we come to a close. This one is big, melodic, something above the others as far as emotion and power. Ending our journey proper.
I cannot say enough for Flagellum I or Archemoron. I find myself stunned and enthralled each time around and I have been waiting for the moment to present them in these old dusty halls. Something such as this can only make the week ahead all the better, all the more bearable. Give their page a visit, their album a listen, and support them and Satanath Records as well should you find this as wonderful as I.
Stay tuned for the follow up artists and albums in the weeks to come as we continue this string of terror from Satanath! \,,/
